My research focus lies within emergency and disaster response management. In a broad sense, I am interested in how response management can be improved, both from a professional and a methodological perspective. More specifically, I am interested in how actors involved in response solve problems together and how this process can be understood and improved. Currently, I am investigating problem-solving networks in the fire and rescue services, and what individual qualities contribute to effective collective problem solving in this context.
Moreover, I am also interested in emergent organisational solutions that are formed to address unforeseen or new needs during emergencies and disasters. These solutions display adaptive capabilities that may be necessary for effective response, but that may also lead to negative consequences during the handling of emergencies and disasters. Currently, I am part of the international research project CORNER, that, among else, investigates just this.
