Personal profile

Research

In the early beginning I was a research assistant during my medical studies at the Department of Physiology, Lund University in Lund researching in diving/respiratory physiology + tutoring laboratory exercises/weekly examinations (duggor) for younger medical students. My professor Claes Lundgren moved to US and I to Örebro Regional Hospital for my clinical career. During my specialist training I started to research on a new plasma substitute – 3% dextran 60, which, after my dissertation in 1987 in Lund became the main blood loss replacement fluid (registered as Plasmadex®) together with erythrocyte concentrate until 2000. Then starch solutions (HES) started to dominate, much due to strong marketing efforts from the German Fresenius company. HES has now been removed, because of a risk for kidney damage in critically ill patients (although not proven for patients during elective surgery with normal renal function). I worked long periods in Lund to connect with the Department and had planned to move to Lund after the dissertation. However, I was involved in starting a new Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Unit in Örebro that became the largest next to Lund in number of yearly open heart surgery cases. I was its Director 1993-1998 and managed to combine hard clinical and administrative work with main tutoring of my first PhD student Gustav Ekbäck – dissertation Linköping 2001. I moved to Skane 1999 due to family reasons and worked until 2006 at Halmstad County Hospital – during this time I restarted my coagulation research together with Martin Engstöm and became associate professor (docent) at Lund University in Anaesthesiology 2004. I had longed to work in Lund already 1999, but employment stop delayed my affiliation until 2007, when I started to work at the Department of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care. It took me some years to build a network. In Lund I have been the main tutor for 3 other PhD students with dissertations 2014 (2) and 2016 (1) and cotutor for 6 other.

Teaching

Currently I tutor 2 other PhD students with dissertations due to 2021,23. Besides PhD students I have been very active in tutoring T10 and T5 medical students for their Master Theses (45 projects so far) and have also been an expert examiner of T10 Master Theses. I have been active in writing national guidelines for Läkemedelsverket, Swedush Society of Thrombosis and Haemostasis (SSTH), Dansk Sundhetsstyrelse, book chapters and lecturing. I work as a senior anaesthetist/intensivist (general/neurointensive care) on all the different sections at our department.
