Research

Objectives: To identify diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers in the cerebral white (WM) and the deep grey matter (GM) in patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD) and atypical parkinsonian syndromes (APS) using diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (dMRI). To investigate longitudinal changes in dMRI in PD and to investigate the role of dMRI biomarkers in PD and APS.

Methods: We included patients and controls from the longitudinal, prospective Swedish BioFINDER study, but also from other clinical centers. We included patients with PD, multiple system atrophy (MSA), progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP). Patients and controls underwent clinical assessment and testning regarding motor function and cognition. dMRI were analysed using Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), Diffusion tensor tractography (DTT), Diffusion kurtosis imaging (DKI), Neurite density Imaging (NDI) and morphometric analyses.
