Research

Dr Yuliya Voytenko Palgan is a researcher and an Associate Professor in Sustainable Development at the International Institute for Industrial Environmental Economics (IIIEE), Lund University, Sweden. She has over 12 years of experience in multicultural, multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary teams. She works in the areas of sustainability, urban governance, innovation and sustainable consumption. Her research focuses on strategies for sustainability solutions in new economies (i.e. sharing economy, bioeconomy and circular economy) and sustainable urban transformation (e.g. nature based solutions in cities, urban living labs). Yuliya has produced over 100 publications in a variety of formats. She has led a research project Sharing and the City funded by Swedish Research Council Formas and she contributes to the research project Urban Sharing: Sustainability and Institutionalisation funded by European Research Council (Grant Agreement No. 771872). Yuliya also did research in the NATURVATION project funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme (Grant Agreement No. 730243). She has worked with sustainable strategies for low-carbon economies in mobility sector by assessing the potential and effects of virtual meetings on the environment, organisations and individuals. 

Teaching

Dr Yuliya Voytenko Palgan works to promote education for sustainability at all levels: postgraduate, graduate, undergraduate and professional. Since 2021 she is the Director of PhD Education at the International Institute for Industrial Environmental Economics (IIIEE), Lund University. Since 2007 she has been engaged as a course developer, course coordinator, educator and tutor in international undergraduate, MSc and PhD programmes at Lund University, Malmö University, Central European University (CEU), CEU Business School as well as in Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC) developed by the IIIEE at Lund University. She has been teaching both from distance and onsite in multi-lingual settings and for students with highly diverse cultural and academic backgrounds. Yuliya teaches on a range of disciplines and topics including environmental science, sustainable development, sustainable consumption, innovative business models for sustainable living, and the sharing economy. She coordinates four MSc courses on applied research and scholarly writing and teaches in four Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). She has developed a Study Abroad Programme with the University of Virginia, USA. Yuliya engaged in professional education and developed training programmes for governmental officials, municipal leaders, entrepreneurs, NGOs and academics from China, Ukraine, Belarus, Russia and Lithuania.

 

Outreach

Prior to her involvement at Lund University, Dr Yuliya Voytenko Palgan worked as a consultant advising industry, policy makers at various levels, municipal leaders, entrepreneurs, research institutions, NGOs and international organisations such as United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), United Nations Food and Agricultural Organisation (UNFAO) and Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) on topics related to energy efficiency, renewable energy, bioenergy, sustainable innovation, sustainable urban governance and development, green economy and waste management. She engaged in professional education and developed training programmes for governmental officials, municipal leaders, entrepreneurs, NGOs and academics from China, Ukraine, Belarus, Russia and Lithuania. She often presents and discusses her research with societal actors including municipalities, businesses, banks, non-governmental organisations and communities. These include among others the European Bank of Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), Cities of Amsterdam, Melbourne, Toronto, Gothenburg, Malmö, Lund and Karlstad, and World Wildlife Fund (WWF).
