A contradiction in terms? Women and migrants in the Swedish Democrats

Within academia there is an increasing interest in studying the growth and success of extreme-right-wing parties in European states and within the European Union, with a large number of edited volumes and increasing number of journal articles. While there is no consensus on how to name them, nor on the impact or projected impact in democratic government, there is a general agreement that the rise and fluctuations of this broad strand of parties say a number of important things about politics in Europe today.
In September 2014 the Sweden Democrats, was re-elected to the Swedish Parliament with 12,9% of the votes, doubling the support they received in the 2010 general election, and now with a presence in almost all municipalities and counties. While scholarship on populist right-wing political parties is expanding, gender analysis is often marginalised. It is the experience of women organised in the Sweden Democrats that is the focus of this study. The aim of the article is to contribute to an understanding of women representing what scholars conceptualise as xenophobic, cultural racist or fascist party in local politics. Central to our study is the exploration of the tensions between Swedish notions of gender equality and the SDs worldview.

Sverigedemokraterna är det största politiska partiet i Sverige utanför riksdagen. De är parlamentariskt representerade i 140 kommuner och i 3 landsting. Framgången för SD har gjort att studier och forskning kring Sverigedemokraterna har ökat kraftigt under de senaste åren, även om det fortfarande rör sig om ett begränsat antal publikationer. Samtidigt finns det mycket lite enighet i förståelsen av SD såväl samhällspolitiskt som vetenskapligt. Vad är Sverigedemokraterna, vad representerar partiet, vad är det bärare av, vem är Sverigedemokraterna som partimedlemmar och aktivister, respektive som sympatisörer och väljare? Den kanske vanligaste diskussionen är hur man skall beteckna Sverigedemokraterna, där begrepp som populism, extremhöger, missnöjes-/protestparti, cirkulerar med ofta relativt oklara preciseringar och definitioner. Projektet har två syften. Vi vill belysa hur antirasistiska, postkoloniala och feministiska teoretiska perspektiv, som är frånvarande vad gäller analysen av dessa fenomen samt analyserar vilken roll kön spelar i konstruktionen av SDs världsbild med tonvikten på kvinnor som är aktiv i partier.
