Project: Research

Project Details

Description

Proper lighting and daylight illumination, physical activity and sleep are interrelated and essential for older adults. However, older adults may not know enough about their changing light needs as they age, and/or how it affects sleep, and/or may not like to exercise, and/or may find it effortful or costly to manage their bedroom and window arrangements to facilitate sleep.

The study aims to support these needs by developing a behaviour-change intervention delivered as a web-based course in close collaboration with subject matter experts. Target users will evaluate the usability of intervention content.
The primary outcome measure is better mood and self-managed adjustments of lighting and darkness conditions in the home. Additional outcome measures are improved sleep quality and increased physical activity.

Long-term goals are independent living, active and healthy ageing, and improved light and darkness conditions in ordinary homes of older people while considering the importance of safety, visual comfort, psychological wellbeing and social needs.

The study asks:
How can an intervention, delivered as a web-based course targeting light, activity and sleep, be designed to support changes to routines and the home to improve wellbeing among older adults?
