Popular science description
After having excavated a castle at Hovdala and it was found out that it started as a viking age farm The surroundin area was surveyed. By map analysis a prehistoric great farm is idenitified in Finja village by the Finja lake in northern Scania. Excavations has confirmed the observations from the map studies. A big farm from migration period and a Hof-holy place is found.
After having been excavating the castle Hovdala south of Finja lake in northern Skåne for many years we could se that the castle started in a small viking age farm with baltic ware and a couple of slavonic finds. This made me interested in the prehistory of the area. By map and landscape studies i realised that the central place could have been Finja. In the historical map material there was found a map from 1687 thet by analyses showed the picture of a iron age main farm. A big ornum of 4,5 hectare streched along the road, later named via Regia on the maps. A grave field with many smaller and two bigger mounds was indikated. The Toft of the farm was seen and west of the toft was the Hof (holy place). Excavations showed us that the farm was situated in Migration period. Frankoroman glas was found. The hof area was surrounded by a palissade and inside the henge there were hearths dated to the viking age. The farm continued into the medievals and was owned by the archbishop of Lund. The church next to the farm is one of the more exclusive churches in the area concerning the paintings. The dimention of the manor is seen in a marginal sign in a document from 1502 when the king slept over night in Finja. His escort was riding on 500 horses. To find the structures of this big manor georadar will be used in 2013.
