Description

Children with type 1 diabetes has an increased risk of developing other autoimmune diseases as celiac disease and thyroid disease. In Sweden we screen children with type 1 diabetes yearly for celiac disease and thyroid disease. The aim with this project is to create a more individual based screening for celiac disease and thyroid disease in children with type 1 diabetes. This by studying the yearly incidence, genetic and immunological factors and metabol differences in children with type 1 diabetes who also have a Celiac disease and/or tyreoid disease. We will also investigate whether differences in gluten introduction during infancy have an impact if and so when a child develop type 1 diabetes

Layman's description

Children with type 1 diabetes has an increased risk of developing other diseases as gluten intolerance and problems with their thyroid gland. In this project we hope to find risk factors for these diseases in children with type 1 diabetes with the aim to be better to diagnose celiac disease and thyroid disease in children with type 1 diabetes. We will also investigate whether gluten introduction during infancy has anything to do with why children get type 1 diabetes.
