In this dissertation project I investigate the historical-literary meaning of the anointing in Bethany in John's Gospel (12:1-8). In the interpretation of the significance of the anointing for Jesus and for the believers a comprehensive collection of ancient Jewish sources such as the Old Testament, the Pseudepigrapha, the Dead Sea Scrolls, and the works of Josephus and Philo are analyzed.
