    Project: Research

    Project Details

    Description

Together with Guro Gravem Johansen, professor in music education at Karlstad University and Christina Larsson, senior lecturer in music education at Karlstad University, I am editor of a new anthology in improvisation in music.

The overall objective of the publication is to provide a multifaceted picture of improvisation in different musical practices. Today we are ten authors from different musical, artistic, research and educational contexts (please see a list on page 2). The collection of book chapters aims to highlight:

•improvisation in a variety of musical contexts and practices
•the roles and functions of improvisation in music
•the potential of improvisation as a transformative force from a broad societal perspective

We will organize the contributions around different musical, aesthetic, and pedagogical contexts to highlight improvisation as a pluralistic transformative force. In doing so, we aim to contribute to making visible and articulating the diversity of genre associations, methods, aesthetic aspects, norms, and different types of performance practices that are associated with the concept of improvisation in music today.
