Beyond Belief: On the Nature and Rationality of Agnostic Religion

Project: Dissertation

Project Details

Description

Contrary to the traditional picture, disbelief or pure agnosticism are not the only alternatives to a religious engagement based on belief. The focus of this study is non-doxasticism, which is basically the view that a religious commitment might be based on agnosticism in combination with attitudes like hope or propositional faith. I assess major accounts of non-doxasticism, with a special focus on the work of J. L. Schellenberg. I also develop my own view and contrast the approach with fictionalism.
