Project Details

Description

This project will investigate the underlying characteristics of a novel concept leading to bulk-like joints between metals: Gas Actuated Bonding (GAB). This will create the necessary knowledge to overcome current challenges in thermal energy storage, turbine engines, and fossil free steel production. In these hot and corrosive environments, joints are typically the source of failure, as they do not inhibit the same strength or corrosion resitance as the bulk materials. The GAB concept may lead to equal properties in joints and bulk through use of melting point depression gases for generating a transient liquid bonding phase.

This is an ERC Starting Grant project.
