Contact allergies and eczema in professional icehockey players.

Project: Research

Project Details

Description

There are no large epidemiological surveys of athletes and their possible skin diseases or contact allergies in the medical literature but only isolated cases of contact allergies. We started a research project which includes the Swedish 2 top leagues of professional icehockey players to see whether these men have more skin diseases or contact allergies compared to the population at large.
We have chosen to examine athletes in a controlled environment, which means elite icehockey players in the two highest Swedish leagues, i.e. 26 different teams in which 500-600 intensely practicing athletes are included.
We hope to show the results to be common for all athletes. The initial study is an epidemiological survey regarding medical history, eczema prevalence, choice of protection, hygiene, known contact allergies or mucous membrane allergies of the entire group of 600 players. Another study is meant to give general and individual advice on how to take care of the skin and to see whether it is possible to influence players to change to more skin-friendly hygiene routines.
The follow-up study is by a re-survey of the whole group, both those who received counseling and those who did not, i.e. a control group. A third study is a patch- test study on selected teams to investigate whether the players have any contact allergies to tested materials from their environment and items anyone can be in contact with.

Popular science description

There are no large epidemiological studies of athletes and their possible skin problems or contact allergies in the medical literature. We started a project which includes the Swedish 2 top leagues of professional icehockey players to see whether these men have more skin diseases or contact allergies compared to the population of the same sex and age in general.
We have chosen to examine elite icehockey players in the two highest Swedish leagues, i.e. 26 different teams, 500-600 intensely practicing athletes.
We hope to show the results to be common for all athletes. The initial
study is an epidemiological study regarding previous diseases, if they have eczema, choice of protection, how they wash themselves and how often, and known contact allergies or mucous membrane allergies in the entire group of 600 players. Another study is meant to give general and individual advice on how to take care of the skin and to see whether it is possible to influence players to change to more skin-friendly hygiene routines.
The follow-up study is a re-survey of the whole group, both those who received counseling and those who did not, i.e. a control group. A third study is a patch- test study on selected teams to investigate whether the players have any contact allergies to tested materials from their environment and items anyone can be in contact with.
