Crofts in Southern Sweden - a microhistorical approach to dwelling and agency

Project: Dissertation

Project Details

Description

In the fall of 2021, I began my doctoral studies in historical archaeology. In the project, I investigate how crofters from the period c. 1650 - 1940 are placed and organized in the landscape. How did the crofters influence the location and design of the croft? How much power did they have over the place where they lived, but which they did not own? Brönnestad parish, in northern Skåne, is used as a study area for a microhistorical study, where one of the aims is to develop methods for how to study croft sites. The theoretical focus of the dissertation is on the relational perspectives, and I attempt to illuminate the many complex explanations that can lie behind the design of a place.
