Layman's description

Exploration of the establishment of an Orthodox and national cultural canon in the past through an examination of a selection of empirical cases (cults of saints) and the reception within contemporary Russian culture.

The project will explore the establishment of an Orthodox and national cultural canon in the past through an examination of a selection of empirical cases (cults of saints).

Furthermore, it will examine the reception, focusing on the function of the transmitted canon in the creation of meaning (national identity) as cultural memory.

Thereby it will be possible to contribute to the understanding of an area within Orthodox cultural heritage in Russia which has not been addressed in studies on Russian culture.

The project addresses this cultural heritage in the memory culture of post-Soviet Russia, in which the sphere of the sacred – mediated in various traditional and modern types of media, such as hymns, icons, film etc. – is reactualized and conferred specific cultural and symbolic meanings.
