Developmental perspectives on the relationship between gesture production and speech fluency

Project: Research

Project Details

Popular science description

It is often assumed that speakers gesture when they have trouble expressing themselves. This would mean that learners gesticulate more than proficient speakers. However, very little is known about the relationship between gestures and fluency. This project investigates gestures’ possible compensatory role by comparing Italian children's and adults' speech and gestures in stories.
