Embedded disposability: A cultural political economy of plastics

Project: Dissertation

Project Details

Description

This research deals with how plastic disposability came to be normalised in Sweden during the 1940s, 50s and 60s. First, through the rise of the self-service store, and as a result the strong growth of the packaging industry and through these factors the rise of Swedish petrochemical production. The result was that plastic disposability became an embedded feature of modern Swedish society, where the issue rather has been internalized through waste management rather than addressed through waste minimization.
