There is a need for (1) greater scientific understanding of long term transitions in industry and the energy system, as well as associated institutions, (2) more knowledge about the prospects for decarbonising basic industry, and (3) the interdependencies of basic industry and the energy system as well as the prospects for their co-evolution. We will make scientific contributions on theory and method for the transition of basic industry, its interplay with the energy system, and provide a basis for future governance and policy strategies. For this purpose we study the energy-intensive natural resource-based industry, and explore mitigation options, integration aspects, and potential development pathways and governance/policy strategies. Who can do what, how and when? The research is unique and novel in its focus on the basic industry and the interdisciplinary combination of four excellent research groups.
