Description

Ice nucleation in mixed-phase clouds significantly impact weather and climate, but the effects are associated with pronounced uncertainties. Supercooled cloud droplets freeze at temperatures near -38"C, if not freezing at higher temperatures is catalyzed e.g. by ice nucleating particles (INPs). Optical properties and lifetimes of mixed-phase clouds are highly influenced by the ice phase, and a large fraction of precipitation events is initiated due to the ice phase.
The main aims are
(i) to provide ambient measurements of INPs,
(ii) assessment of INP sources and
(iii) application of INP data to improve weather and climate modeling.

This project is funded by the Strategic Research Area MERGE.
