Identification of parent of origin effects influencing the loss of beta cell mass and function in type 2 diabetes

Project: Research

Project Details

Investigating paternal and maternal contributions to loss of beta cell mass and function in type 2 diabetes.

Layman's description

Type 2 diabetes (T2D) has a strong heritable component and shows a preferential maternal transmission.
Parent-of-origin effects (POE), wherein the origin of the risk allele (maternal or paternal) determines if a specific allele is neutral, protective or increases the risk of developing T2D, could explain increased transmission of T2D from mothers, and relate to developmental programming. Here, we aim to parent-of-origin effects (POE) which could result in reduced beta cell mass and contribute to type 2 diabetes risk.
