Image quality / radiation doses at cone-beam CT (CBCT) examinations

Project: Research

Project Details

Description

We have in cooperation with the section of neuroimaging and department of orthopedic surgery at Skåne University Hospital examined a mobile intraoperative imaging system for orthopedic surgery. The aim of the study was to optimize the examination protocols and calculate organ and effective doses in patients undergoing surgery of the spine of this new type of X-ray equipment.

The imaging system consists of a C-arm with the possibility to tomography. The system is known as a "cone-beam CT" (CBCT) which places new demands on methods for dose estimation. Dose calculations have been performed using Monte Carlo simulation software, and the resulting images were evaluated and compared with the corresponding conventional CT images.

The results of our study showed great potential for dose reduction compared with the protocol settings recommended by the manufacturer. Our intention is to continue develop and explore CBCT dosimetry and we also see the potential for future studies in the field of dental radiology where this type of equipment also frequently used.
