Project Details

Description

InnoTLT will develop the key mass timber product cross-laminated timber (CLT) towards tailored laminated timber (TLT).
The concept of TLT includes applications such as walls and floors as well as connections between TLT elements. TLT shall have improved performance in terms of strength, stiffness, and thermal insulation. A 20% improvement in comparison with today’s CLT products is foreseen. Concepts include tailoring the orientation of layers, using hardwood species and return wood, and discontinuous lay-ups. Literature studies, workshops with partners from practice, experimental investigations, and theoretical methods using analytical and numerical approaches are performed. InnoTLT highlights the technical potential of this innovation, verifying its environmental and climatic benefits in relation to other materials, exemplifying its role in a circular construction sector, and suggesting new approaches in terms of joining techniques applicable also for today’s products. The project will have a considerable influence on mass timber construction in general, especially in allowing new concepts in future product standards and design. By improved wood-based components, the construction sector and society will be prepared for next-generation building and living with wood. In achieving this, the project will contribute to the future competitiveness of the forest-based sector in general and the wood products- and wood construction sectors in particular.
