INNOVAGE - User driven housing for older people

INNOVAGE focuses on developing and testing social innovations that will have a solid impact on improving the quality of life and well-being of older people. INNOVAGE is a joint project between 9 partners: Lund University, Heidelberg University, Sheffield University, Newcastle Upon Tyne University, Italian National Research Centre on Aging, Latvian Council of Science, Age Platform Europe AISBL, European Association Working for Carers and coordinated by Sheffield Hallam University. The INNOVAGE partners have a different focus that all together will make a major contribution to the EU goal of extending healthy life years.

Significant development
Here in Lund (work package 2) we focus on developing user-driven housing for older people. We see a tendency where older people and people with disabilities want to make their own assessments of the possibility to demand adequate housing. Since future generations will place greater demands on their own decisions about their housing, there is a significant development in making them stakeholders in urban development.

New computer-based tool
We have for the last 20 years devoted ourselves to applied research in this area, in close collaboration with stakeholders in the construction industry and housing sector. The methodology developed - the Housing Enabler instrument – is based on the professional user to make judgments of people with disabilities and their living environment. The principal idea behind this project is to make use of this evidence-based methodology and develop a new computer-based tool for inventory and prediction of housing accessibility, for use by older people themselves and their organizations. Older people will be able to use the computer-based tool to evaluate the accessibility and suitability of housing and thereby affect housing design and housing construction through active demand for accessible environments.

Research circles in four countries
A fundamental part of the development of the interactive and user-oriented product is the use of research circles to generate new knowledge that will be reflected in a specification of user requirements for this new product. Conducted in Sweden, Latvia, Germany and Italy, the research circles served as a place for reflection on housing provision, on the built environment and the barriers impeding accessibility, and on the benefit of a computer-based tool. Based on the scientifically established Housing Enabler methodology and guided by the specification of user requirements generated by the research circles, an Android App for 10” surf tablets (in English, Swedish and Latvian) was developed.

Usability tests in Sweden and Latvia
To evaluate the App for use by the targeted end users and to provide vital input for the further development and design process, usability tests were conducted in Sweden and Latvia with successive user panels. The user panels comprised in total 30 people 65 years or older. A combination of individual usability tests in the homes of the participants and follow up group fora were carried out. The usability test results served to improve and fine-tune the App, now available as a refined prototype.

EU-miljoner ska ge äldre möjlighet att påverka framtidens bostäderEuropa behöver bostäder som hjälper äldre att bo kvar hemma och leva ett aktivt liv. Men det saknas i dag ett enkelt digitalt redskap som äldre själva kan använda för att bidra till den utvecklingen. Det ska forskare knutna till CASE och MultiPark vid Lunds universitet råda bot på genom sin medverkan i INNOVAGE, ett EU-projekt kring sociala innovationer.EU-projektet INNOVAGE handlar om att utveckla praktiska lösningar som bidrar till ett aktivt och hälsosamt åldrande och ökar äldres påverkan och delaktighet i samhället. Projektet består av fyra delprojekt och har en budget på 3 miljoner euro under de närmaste tre åren. Av dessa går 580 000 euro till Lunds universitet och delprojektet ”User driven housing for older people”.Applikation för surfplattaMålsättningen är att ta fram ett datorbaserat verktyg, en applikation för surfplattor. Som äldre enkelt kan använda och därigenom påverka hur deras egna och framtidens bostäder ska byggas, renoveras och anpassas för att stödja ett gott åldrande. Både inomhus och i närmiljön, till exempel i soprummet, trappuppgången eller badrummet. Det nya verktyget bygger på ett fullskaligt instrument för tillgänglighetsbedömningar, Housing Enabler.Forskningscirklar i fyra länderEn central del av projektet baseras på så kallad forskningscirkel-metodik. Där - förutom äldre personer med olika typ och grad av funktionsnedsättning - även deltagare som representerar aktörer i bostadsförsörjningsprocessen kommer att delta. Forskningscirklarna har en avgörande roll för projektet på så sätt att det är de som tagit fram kravspecifikationen, som sedan legat till grund för utvecklingen av själva verktyget. Forskningscirklarna genomfördes i Sverige, Lettland, Tyskland och Italien. Baserat på forskningscirklarnas kravspecifikation, och med Housing Enabler som metodologisk plattform, har en Android App (i svensk, engelsk och ettisk språkversion) för 10” surfplattor utvecklats.Användbarhetstester i Sverige och LettlandÄven testningsfasen av prototypen har präglat av en hög grad av aktiv brukarmedverkan, för att säkerställa högsta möjliga användarvänlighet för den tilltänkta målgruppen. Användbarhetstester genomfördes i Sverige och Lettland och omfattade totalt 30 användare som var 65 år eller äldre. Under testningen utnyttjades en kombination av individuella tester och diskussioner i grupp. Resultaten av användbarhetstesterna hjälpte till att förbättra och finjustera appen, som nu finns tillgänglig som prototyp.Flera europeiska delprojektÖvriga delprojekt inom INNOVAGE är ”Improving Obesity Related Outcomes in Old Age” som rör fetma och diabetes bland äldre och leds av University of Sheffield, Storbritannien. Delprojektet ”Long-term Care in Motion” behandlar fysisk träning och välbefinnande inom olika boende- och vårdformer för äldre. Koordinator är Ruprecht-Karlsuniversitetet i Heidelberg, Tyskland. Egenfinansierade vårdanställdaDet sista delprojektet, ”ICT-based social support for Carers of Older People”, ansvarar italienska INRCA (National Institute of Health and Science on Aging) för. Här kommer man att undersöka hur webbapplikationer kan stödja närstående eller egenfinansierade anställda som vårdar äldre.
