Interactive construction robotics: 3d-printning, adaption and sensor feedback

Project: Research

Project Details

Description

We explore 3d printing using sensor-feedback robotics, adapted for climate-smart and durable materials that are difficult to handle effectively in today's existing construction processes, e.g. unfired clay. We will develop and integrate control and design systems required for the use of robots and 3d printing on the construction site in a way that takes advantage of the potential benefits with these technologies. The processes challenge the existing paradigm of a linear and predefined construction process, opening up for integration and feedback between design, production and use phases. This capability is a fundamental building block for ground-breaking applications of nature-based solutions in the construction industry.

Within the work packages, methodology is developed and systems are developed that make it possible to use sensor-controlled 3d printing and also using this data to correct and adapt the construction after an unpredictable and changing situation. Architecturally, the project contributes to a closer connection between design and construction by developing design tools that directly operate at this interface, enabling better quality, sustainability and economy.
