Linnaeus and South America: Edition of and studies in Daniel Rolander's Diarium Surinamicum, his botanicl, zoological and anthropological report.

The Swedish botanist and zoologist Daniel Rolander was sent by his teacher Carl Linnaeus to Suriname in 1754 to describe plants, animals and peoples in this Dutch plantation colony. In his report, the Diarium Surinamicum (700 pages, in Latin) he stands out as an experienced researcher and as an accomplished writer. His principle seems to have been to teach by entertaining.
