Metabolic characterization of high sugar consumers

The potential role of sugar consumption in the development of cardio-metabolic diseases has received great attention, but whether sugar consumption plays a central role is still not known. Recent developments in high-throughput technologies, including the advances in analyzing gut microbiota composition, metabolites and genetic markers, have made it possible to characterize large populations and have been fundamental in our understanding of disease progress. However, a metabolic characterization of high sugar consumers is still lacking, and can give us novel insight into the most important disease pathways.
