Project: Research

Project Details

Popular science description

This project is a collaboration between Swedish, Danish and Norwegian researchers initiated in 2015 with a panel at the DiGRA conference, Lüneburg. The anthology is co-edited by Jessica Enevold, Lund University and Anne Mette Thorhaugen, Copenhagen University. The symposium on the theme What is the problem in problem gaming? is held 21/1 2016.

Game addiction is often studied from a psychologizing and medicalizing perspective. This project departs from social science and humanities perspectives using empirically grounded studied of fanlies, players, schools, policies, therapists and others engaged in the process. The gaming concerned is computer gaming, not gambling. The term problem gaming rather than addiction is used to mark an alternative discourse problematizing the concept of addiction itself, and the research engages with the everyday nature of the problem in order to produce new nuances and angles on the phenomenon.
