Project Details

Description

This project is based on an earlier study (Bianchi, Savardi, Kubovny, 2011), in which the phenomenological experience of spatial dimensions was mapped in terms of their metrical and topological structure. The purpose of the project is to extend these previous results to sensory dimensions (i.e., smell, taste, touch, sound and sight). The first purpose is to establish whether the characterizations of the dimensions found in the original study also apply to adjectives that describe sensory experiences. One interesting characteristic of these adjectives (e.g., high, delicious, loud, abrasive) is that they are often used across different sensory domains. The adjective 'thin', for instance, may be used to describe an object or a person, but also a smell or a taste. The adjective 'low' may describe an object but also a sound. The second purpose of the project is to establish whether the same metrical and topological structure is found for these adjectives within different sensory domains.
