PAPAYA - Policy for Equity in African Agriculture

Project: Research

Project Details

PAPAYA analyses patterns of smallholder agricultural intensification in Zambia, Tanzania and Malawi from a sustainability perspective with particular attention to: (a) gender and youth; and (b) the ways existing rural institutions could be enabled and incentivised to improve equity given prevailing policies, norms and structures.

The project provides empirical evidence to answer the following overarching research question:

How can equity issues be best addressed in Sustainable Intensification approaches and policies to ensure the needs and interests of poorer smallholders, especially youth and women, are properly addressed?

The research contextualises findings at the district level as well as within national agricultural policies, processes of institutional change, the changing landscape of risk and broader demographic and socio-economic shifts.
