Molecular oxygen is fundamental for various intracellular biochemical reactions and essential for most living species. Consequently, hypoxic conditions are a major stressor and a prominent pathological feature that require cells to sense and respond accordingly. Brain pericytes, surrounding capillaries, are at the frontline of detecting fluctuations in oxygen levels due to their unique position at the blood/brain interface. Recent studies indicates that pericytes play a central role in blood-brain barrier (BBB) integrity, angiogenesis, and modulation of the immune-inflammatory response after cerebral hypoxia. However, little is still known of the exact mechanisms of pericyte oxygen-sensing, secretome changes or transcriptional regulation in hypoxic environments. In my work I use different methods to understand how pericytes react to hypoxia and what potential molecules that could be targeted to modulate their response.
