Layman's description

The project Potential for Success explores attitudes and skills in the professional librarians of the 21st century. The aims of the project are to identify and analyse the expectations and demands of tentative employers on new professional library staff. In addition, the extent to which Swedish LIS students fulfill these demands is also investigated.

The project Potential for Success explores professional attitudes and skills of the librarians of the 21st century. The research question concerns the qualities of the library workforce in the next 10-20 years. The expectations and demands of tentative employers on the personal qualities of their new librarians have been identified and analysed. In addition the extent to which Swedish LIS students meet their future employers' demands has also been investigated. A group of LIS students have also taken Cattell's 16PF personality test.

This mapping of the potential for success of the future Swedish library workforce yields important and useful data for the education and recruitment of professionals for the library and information sector through the next decade.

Today the demands on librarians' skills and professionalism are very different from 20 years ago. The changes are greatly influenced by the ICT-development as well as changes in society at large. All professional librarians are noew required to work with both physical and digital collections since the ever expanding Internet and web based information services are now replacing or integrated with traditional services. Naturally, the new general conditions and the issue of future skills requirements also influence LIS education noticeably. In 2009 the final report of the project has been completed. Even though empirical data are now 8-9 years old the results are still relevant today.
