Risk factors for fall and fracture

Description

What are the underlying causes of falls among the elderly, and what are the consequences? Can new blood analyses detect severe complications, such as infection, heart failure and kidney failure more accurately than conventional methods?

In this prospective cohort study, elderly individuals admitted to Department of Orthopedics due to fall-related trauma (with or without fracture) are included. Blood samples, forms and tests associated with known and presumed risk factors are assessed as part of new routine care program.

Falls - especially when an individual suffers from the well-studied hip fracture - among the elderly are not only associated with high mortality and morbidity, but also hich economic costs for the society. Theoritical knowledge of risk factors for falls is partly outdated, partly not applied to the everyday clinical care. Therefore, we aim to examine if clinically easily available tests and new blood tests can identify causes and complications of falls, and if new falls can be prevented through this knowledge,
