The location of the runic stones in the landscape are a key to understand the meaning and purpose of the monuments. By studying their location in the landscape, it becomes possible to better understand the social context in which the text on the runic stones where formulated. This project will on a micro-level study why runic stones were erected on the places where they are found and how the runic stones were experienced and perceived in the landscape. What were the meaning and interconnection between function, place and landscape? The study area is the runic stones of southern Småland (Tiohärads lagsaga). The project is a co-operation with Per Stille, Department of Language and Literature, Linneaus Universitet. The project will involve archaeological excavations, landscape analysis, and studies of the runic texts.
