Teaching sex? Teachers' knowledge about and strategies towards non-heteronormative youth in Canada

Project: Research

Project Details

Description

This project is about teachers’ and schools’ knowledge about queer_ed students. With this project, I analyze strategies in education policy and practice that address sexual and gender diversity in Canada, where there is a long tradition of both anti-discrimination legislation and of queer activism that also has created some changes in schools. These strategies both succeed and fail in creating schools that are good places for queer/ed students and teachers. The study is based on interviews with teachers and activists in Vancouver and Toronto in Canada. Participants discuss social justice work as well as changes in policy and curriculum, as well as the limitations they experience in this work.

Funding: Faculty Research Program grant by the Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada.
