The connection between oral intake of irritant/allergic substances and the sensitivity of the skin when in contact with these substances

Project: Research

Project Details

Description

Eczema can be caused by both internal factors, such as an inherited risk of developing eczema, and external factors such as skin contact with substances that are irritant or cause allergy. The severity and probability of developing an eczema caused by external factors are dependent upon the dose - the more you are exposed to higher the risk of both development of eczema and its severity. Contact dermatitis caused by irritant and allergic substances is common. It is much more uncommon that indivuals have a flare-up of eczema caused by something that they have eaten but occasionally it does occur.
In this Project we intend to investigate if the concentration of an allergen or an irritant in the blood has any relationship with the skins ability to develop an eczema when in Contact with the substance in question. If a connection can be established this will affect how Contact eczema is treated and prevented since not only the skin exposure but also the oral intake must be taken into account.
