The role of artefacts in relation to agency

Project: Dissertation

Project Details

Description

I aim to provide a cognitive semiotic explanation of the role of artefacts in relation to human agency. The contribution of this research is relevant for the current debate on extended/distributed cognition and material agency. In addition to cognitive semiotics, the research is also relevant for understanding the cognitive processes of design.

Popular science description

I aim to provide further understanding of how meaning emerges in our relationship with artefacts and how this affects the way we act (agency). The contribution of this research is relevant for the current debate on extended/distributed cognition (claiming that the things are part and parcel of our mental processes) and material agency (claiming that the role of artefacts is active and symmetrical to the role of human beings in terms of agency). In addition to cognitive semiotics, the research is also relevant for understanding the cognitive (mental) processes of design.
