The Swedish Pompeii Project

Projektet skapades år 2000 vid Svenska Institutet i Rom, som fortfarande står som en huvudman. År 2002 flyttades ledningen till Stockholms och 2010 till Lunds universitet. Det har fått omfattande stöd från de flesta av de större stiftelser som intresserar sig för humanistisk forskning, i kronologisk ordning: Torsten och Ingrid Gihls stiftelse (Vitterhetsakedemien), Knut och Alice Wallenbergs stiftelse, Riksbankens jubileumsfond, kulturvetenskapliga donationen, De söderbergska stiftelserna, Vetenskapsrådet, Marcus och Amalia Wallenbergs stiftelse, Fondazione Famiglia Rausing, Enboms

The task undertaken in Pompeii is to record and analyse a full city-block, insula V 1, excavated in the 19th century. The aim is to safeguard the remains and to gain data concerning past livelihood. Our research also includes a study of reception, Pompeian influences in Sweden and on a wider European scene from the early modern period to the present day.
