Tin whiskers: modeling and experiments

Project: Dissertation

Project Details

Description

Whiskers are crystalline grains of e.g. tin, spontaneously growing out of a surface.
The research is aimed at understanding the mechanisms causing whisker growth in for example lead-free solders. This is done using X-ray diffraction experiments to measure crystal orientation and strain in 3D as well as numerical models based on crystal plasticity and phase-fields.
