Popular science description
The aim of the project was to prepare and conclude an article on Arab Islamic Rhetoric with a focus on issues of defintion of this very concept and with a view on the historical points in common with the tradition of Western rhetoric. The aim of the project was to conclude my work with an article on Arabic equivalents to the word rhetoric and Islamic traditions on this subject ('ilm al-balagha as well as fann al-khataba). The resulting article was later published in International Journal of Middle East Studies (2005). Here, I discuss conceptual problems in previous studies of the history of Arab Islamic rhetoric and propose new points of departure and lines of inquiry.
