Abstract

In order to compete on the international market, companies today need to optimize their production continually. One way to achieve this is to minimize the frequency and length of downtime in the production.
The downtimes in a particular manufacturing line were classified on the basis of what generated them; a production performance analysis was carried out, and then a cost model was applied to the results. After an initial study of all the products involved, five products were selected for more detailed analyses. Manufacturing costs were found to differ between products and also between batches of the same product. There appeared to be considerable potential for improvements
