Abstract

In order to electrify commercial distribution vehicles, an easy to use charging infrastructure with minimum driver interaction is needed, as managing time is essential to maximize profit for this type of vehicles. This paper proposes the use of a piece of a conductive Alternating Short-Segmented Electric Road System (ASSE) as an automatic charger for lightweight distribution vans. Since the ASSE is originally designed for dynamic charging, no additional equipment onboard the vehicle is required to charge from an ERS, should it be available as well. In order to analyze the performance of the system, a demonstrator of an ASSE automatic charger is installed at the depot of a logistics distribution company. Based on the measurements conducted, the ASSE solution is compared to manual AC and DC charging, and automatic inductive charging with respect to efficiency and cost. The results of this comparison show that the cheapest solution is still manual AC charging, and the cost for automation drops if the cost for non-depot chargers can be shared by multiple vehicles.
