Abstract
The aim of this study was to derive simple risk-based equations to be used in fire safety design. Design values for the equations are derived from a specific target risk, usually described as the target
reliability index β. Using the design values with accepted calculation methods would result in an accepted engineering solution to the problem. This approach is commonly used in structural engineering and is here applied to the design of exit width for emergency evacuations in shopping malls. The result from the study shows the approach is practicable usable, but future research is required to increase the margin of safety of the method.
