Abstract

Railway accidents where children are injured or killed cause sorrow and grief in all those involved. These accidents are more common than often believed. Thus, 29 children and adolescents have been killed or seriously injured on the Swedish railways during the last three years. In this project, children’s and adolescents’ accidents in connection with trains and railways are charted and classified. The accidents are described, the issues concerned discussed, and suggestions put forward as to how these accidents may be prevented. The review is based on a critical examination of Swedish and international rail accident data, as well as the consequences of the accidents. It is concluded that by identifying the most frequent causal factors and critically comparing them to the preventive measures already proposed it will be possible to bring forth more effective improvements of children’s safety on the railways.
