Abstract
This essay deals with neuropsychiatric diagnostic entities and practices which was under public discussion in Sweden 2000-2007, a debate in which the author took an active part. The ambition is to look beyond the more conspicuous features and outline the social and cultural settings in which the debate took place, as well as the different class and value systems underlying the rhetoric.
