Abstract
In Truffaut's film Fahrenheit 451 there is a scene showing some people learning to recite the great classics by heart - this is an image of the use of literary criticism - it is an undertaking necessary to preserve, interprete and evaluate literature - writing becomes language first when it is read.This is the use of the not useful.
