title = "Expertise: How do we develop a career long engagement with teaching?",
abstract = "In this chapter we examine how we can deepen our understanding and expertise as higher education teachers through ongoing personal and professional development, building on the notion in Chapter Three that {\textquoteleft}Our teaching is always in the process of developing{\textquoteright}. The chapter begins with an overview of what it means to develop our {\textquoteleft}expertise{\textquoteright} in higher education teaching and puts this in relation to the notion of scholarship of teaching and learning. We look at the importance of informal learning and the influence of the collegial workplace in relation to our engagement and professional development. This chapter also considers some of the ways in which universities are trying to appraise and reward engagement with teaching through a variety of reward mechanisms and promotion policies that focus on recognising teaching excellence, scholarship of teaching and learning, and leadership in learning and teaching as key performance areas. Finally, we consider some of the milestones that might typically characterise an academic career and how we can engage with respect to our career trajectory and promotion opportunities, as well as what to consider when constructing a teaching portfolio.",
