Abstract
The escape from the Middle Ages:
An escape from the Middle Ages is observed among Medieval archaeologists. The author argues that the etsablishment of Medieval archaeology as a discipline was closely connected to the rise of an urban archaeology. Consequently, the main background to the escape from the Middle Ages is the decline of urban archaeology. In correlation, it might even be seen as an escape from the burden of the so-called "mass material" which urban archaeology has left.
