Abstract

This dataset features geocoding for the complete population of:

Landskrona at the block-level from 1904-1967;
Landskrona at the address-level from 1939-1967; and
Kävlinge at the block-level from 1939-1967.

All these populations are part of the Scanian Economic-Demographic Database (SEDD). SEDD is a high-quality, longitudinal database that covers five Scanian parishes: Halmstad, Hög, Kågeröd, Kävlinge, and Sireköpinge, as well as the city of Landskrona. It encompasses the period 1646-1967, offering full coverage of the entire population from circa 1815 for the five parishes and from 1880 for Landskrona. The database provides continuous, individual-level information on events such as births, marriages, deaths, as well as details on occupation, income, and migration (refer to Bengtsson et al., 2021; Dribe & Luciana, 2020; https://www.ed.lu.se/databases/sedd).

The geocoding process required the reconstruction of certain aspects of the historical geography of the towns, which included objects like buildings, roads, and block boundaries. For the address geocoding, steps included standardizing historical addresses from SEDD and linking these to current geographical points and structures using Lantmäteriet's Real Property Register (https://www.lantmateriet.se/en/realproperty/Fastighetsinformation/Fastighetsregistret/). Additionally, georeferenced maps and aerial photos from Landskrona city (https://karta.landskrona.se/) were used to determine the construction and demolition years of buildings and streets (see also Hedefalk and Dribe, 2020). For block geocoding, the method also entailed digitizing blocks from historical maps and comparing them with modern blocks.
