Abstract
This dissertation deals with the concept of health in relation to the subject "Nursing" (Omvårdnad). "Nursing"is the principal subject in nursing education in Sweden today and can be translated both as "nursing" and as "caring". The aim of the dissertation is to survey, describe and analyse the theoretical concept of health and to provide examples of nursing activities that enhance/hinder health. With the intention of providing a deeper insight a qualitative research perspective rooted in a phenomenological-hermeneutic scientific perspective was chosen.
The dissertation consists of research activities, literature studies and empirical investigations. The empirical material show the result of 42 interviews (32 with elderly patients and 10 with registered nurses), 57 descriptions of situations by nursing students and one observation study.
The perspective finally chosen for this presentation implies that heaIth is described as a philosophical concept in a theoretical framework of human motivation. Three theoreticians from USA has been selected for examination with regard to the concept of health Rogers, Parse and Newman. This selection was motivated by societys demand for health- and nursing care based on respect for the patients selfdetermination and integrity. The empirical studies shows that the theoretical interpretative framework chosen will be decisive for how the concept is presented.
As a pedagogical implication it is proposed that "Nursing" as a subject would be built up around the two central concepts "caring" and "health". In order to deal with the theoretical concept of health a model for the subject "Nursing" is proposed.
