Abstract
This paper presents a general view, from a Swedish perspective, of one of the less known Queens of Sweden, Isabella (Elisabeth) of Habsburg. She was the daughter of Philip I and Joan I of Castile, and thus the sister of the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V. She married the Danish-Norwegian-Swedish King Christian II, in Sweden generally known as Christian the Tyrant. After a short biography of the Scandinavian Queen, the tracks Isabella left on the Swedish historical tradition are discussed, as well as the debated question of her conversion to the Lutheran faith. The result shows a kind and virtuous young Queen, a victim of the politics of her time, who never hesitated to follow her husband in both success and failure, but whose memory was subjected to a sort of damnatio memoriae in Sweden, the country she was Queen of but never visited.
